Where Are They Now?
The Department of Anesthesiology has always had such wonderful people who have contributed to make it what it is today. We would like to know what some of our colleagues and friends who have moved on are doing now and how UMMC played a role in their careers and lives. If would like to be featured in future articles of the newsletter, please e-mail Sara Robertson at smbrobertson@umc.edu. We would love to hear from you!
Tip Jacob (UMMC Retired CRNA)
I had a wonderful and varied career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. After working my way through anesthesia school at the University of Alabama, I accepted a solo position in Greenville, MS at Kings Daughters Hospital. I worked there for 13 years before forming a CRNA group. I worked a total of 22 years there.
My last 21 years included three plus years at St Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, MS and 18 years at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. I was very active in the Mississippi Association of Nurse Anesthetists. This was enjoyable and rewarding both personally and professionally. I retired from UMMC in October 2014.
Upon retiring, I have kept busy traveling, keeping up my yard, hunting, fishing, enjoying and helping my large family, and also developing and keeping up our family land for hunting and fishing. I also had until recently a nice house on the Tennessee Tombigbee waterway. I have caught many fish there. I taught a bunch of grandkids to ski there. Many wonderful memories there.
In 2016, I took a Jeep trip on the Transamerica Trail. I went with a friend who had a 1995 Jeep. We went from North Carolina to the ocean in Oregon on 94% dirt roads and trails. We camped when weather permitted and saw amazing sights and parks all across America. It took us 6 weeks to complete the Trail.
After selling my river house, I moved my fishing boat to the Ross Barnett reservoir. I mostly fish with my Labrador retriever, Sugar. I recently added a large screened outdoor kitchen to my house, and we cook and entertain there.
My family is large and so is my wife’s family. We are very family oriented. I now have six Grands and four Great Grands. We stay involved with them, their ballgames, and other events.
Presently, I am at home recovering from a four level cervical fusion with hardware. I am planning a fall trip to Port Aransas in south Texas to fish and relax on the beach.
In planning for retirement: First, always pay yourself first each month. This means save in addition to what your company withholds for retirement. If you are a State employee, you have PERS. It is wonderful. You should know this plan’s ins and outs and use it to plan when and how to retire.
Second thing is to be debt free when you retire. This includes everything including house, cars, student debt etc. Do not incur debt after you are retired. Buy only without borrowing.
Third thing. Before retiring, know what your monthly expenses are. Have more than enough to cover them and have a good nest egg of savings for emergencies. With these things done you have financial freedom. Truly liberating!
Retirement is fun. Retirement for me has been busy and fun. My wife and I have been truly blessed with a big and wonderful family, many good friends, and a good church. I keep a calendar and check it daily. So far, there are no workdays on it!
